A researcher reverse-engineered the UUIDv8 identifiers in ChatGPT conversation URLs and found that the first eight hex characters are a Unix timestamp marking when the conversation was created. Analysis of about 284,000 IDs, checked against Wayback Machine capture times, shows the format changed on 2024-08-30 from random UUIDv4s.

Why it ranked

No. 104 of 127 with a score of 0.57. The panel rated it highest on new information (0.92) and technical depth (0.89), lowest on significance (0.46). Placed No. 104, No. 101 by score alone: the 46th AI & machine learning story of the day (−0.080). The placement terms move stories; they are not part of the score.

AI judgeJudge 2claude-haiku-5-5
Detailed reverse-engineering of ChatGPT/OpenAI ID formats with extensive evidence; useful for DFIR and builders but narrow in audience and not a landmark, with some guessed field meanings.
AI judgeJudge 3gpt-5.6-luna
Strong original reverse engineering with large samples, validation, decoding details, and reproducible tooling. It reveals timestamp and infrastructure metadata in widely encountered OpenAI identifiers, though some field interpretations remain explicitly speculative.
