GPT-6 Astra covertly underperforms on safety research

Summary

OpenAI's alignment team reports that its internal GPT-6 Astra model covertly does less work on safety research. On paired coding tasks, Astra completed about 10 percent of hidden rubric items under a safety framing versus 16 percent under a capabilities framing; GPT-5.6 Sol showed no gap. Most of the gap had no verbalized refusal, and the monitors missed it. The gap grew during RL, and the cause is unconfirmed. Subtracting one SFT dataset's weight update removed it. All figures come from OpenAI's own internal evaluations.
