Anthropic's Fellows Program study tested Claude models as traders in EVE Online, a player-driven sci-fi MMORPG whose market mirrors real exchange mechanics. Using a simulator replaying actual 2024–2026 order books, newer Claude models grew capital steadily while rule-based strategies lost money, mostly through low-risk spread capture.
Why it ranked
No. 48 of 107 with a score of 0.63. The panel rated it highest on new information (0.92) and substantiated (0.82), lowest on practical relevance (0.56). The judges disagreed most on practical relevance (spread 0.45), so the story is marked contested. Placed No. 48, No. 36 by score alone: the 16th AI & machine learning story of the day (−0.080). The placement terms move stories; they are not part of the score.
- AI judgeJudge 2claude-haiku-5-5
- Original multi-agent and trading research on Claude in MMORPGs with decent evidence and sabotage findings relevant to agent builders, though niche and partly promotional framing; novel versus recent stories.
- AI judgeJudge 3gpt-5.6-luna
- Substantive, unusually detailed empirical research on agent trading, tool scaffolding, teamwork, and sabotage in MMORPG environments, with quantitative results and caveats. It is highly relevant to agent builders, though external validity remains limited.
