Google and Meta's PyTorch team released TorchTPU, an open source PyTorch backend for TPUs that replaces the Lazy Tensor-based PyTorch/XLA. Moving a model is meant to need little more than changing the device from "cuda" to "tpu". It adds a DeferAndFuse eager mode that the authors say can run 50% or more faster than strict eager, supports about 450 ATen ops, and works with vLLM, SGLang and TorchTitan. The performance, model-coverage and benchmark figures come from the authors and were not independently verified.
