Cloud architect Andrija Panić has released OpenVDDK, an open-source, independently written replacement for VMware's Virtual Disk Development Kit library, which VMware restricted to partners in August. Because tools such as virt-v2v, nbdkit, Proxmox VE and Apache CloudStack depend on that library to read VM disks, its restriction hampered migrations.

Read the original at theregister.com. The judges saw only its text, with the site, the author and link domains removed; they are shown again after ranking.

Why it ranked

No. 38 of 137 with a score of 0.62. The panel rated it highest on new information (0.88) and reader interest (0.75), lowest on audience breadth (0.51). Placed No. 38, No. 54 by score alone: the fifth Infrastructure & DevOps story of the day (−0.040). The placement terms move stories; they are not part of the score.

AI judgeJudge 2claude-haiku-5-5
Open-source VM disk library replacement with concrete tested details and practical migration relevance for infrastructure builders; narrower audience, modest significance, excerpt only.
AI judgeJudge 3gpt-5.6-luna
A technically relevant open-source replacement restores VM migration and backup workflows after VDDK access restrictions. The excerpt includes implementation details and compatibility testing, but is incomplete and supports only moderate confidence.
