eMudhra: Free Certificates for Everyone

In October 2026, security researcher Wayne used Google's open-source paranoid_crypto tool to find that eMudhra, a public certificate authority, had issued eight intermediate certificates with trivially weak private keys, each chosen from only 256 possibilities.
Why it ranked
No. 39 of 137 with a score of 0.69. The panel rated it highest on reader interest (0.81) and practical relevance (0.76), lowest on new information (0.59). The judges disagreed most on new information (spread 0.77), so the story is marked contested. Placed No. 39, No. 14 by score alone: the tenth Security story of the day (−0.080), and close to “4 real? Tracking exploitation and patching of eMudhra’s weak keys”, No. 1 on Saturday 31 October 2026 (−0.029). The placement terms move stories; they are not part of the score.

- Major CA key-weakness incident affecting Web PKI with substantive detail, relevant to builders relying on certificates; a newsletter digest of many items, with analysis and some opinion.
- AI judgeJudge 3gpt-5.6-luna
- A technically substantive PKI failure analysis with concrete implications for certificate issuance, CT, revocation, browsers, and machine-to-machine clients. It is highly relevant, but largely duplicates the recent eMudhra coverage and includes some alarming extrapolation.
