Progress Report: Linux 7.3 - Asahi Linux

Comments on “Progress Report: Linux 7.3 - Asahi Linux”

Claim-checked. Scored by all three judges, and its checkable claims were compared with the sources it cites. How far stories are checked

Asahi Linux's Linux 7.3 progress report says M3 Macs no longer need the installer's EXPERT flag, and that the macaudio (about 3,100 lines) and AVD (about 13,000 lines) drivers are on the kernel mailing list. Thunderbolt patches are upstream too, but only USB3, XDomain and networking work, not PCIe or DisplayPort tunnelling. Google's Android P3S patch let 4 KiB-page games run without muvm, but it is hard-coded for 16 KiB hosts, so Asahi will not ship it. The figures are the project's own and were not independently verified.

Why it ranked

No. 14 of 51 with a score of 0.60. The panel rated it highest on new information (0.95) and technical depth (0.81), lowest on audience breadth (0.47). Placed No. 14, No. 26 by score alone: the placement terms moved other stories past it.

AI judgeJudge 2claude-haiku-5-5
Detailed Asahi Linux progress report covering Apple Silicon drivers, GPU reverse engineering, Thunderbolt, and a licensing change; substantive technical content but niche audience and no landmark significance.
AI judgeJudge 3gpt-5.6-luna
A technically detailed progress report covering upstream Linux drivers, Apple Silicon virtualization, GPU reverse engineering, Thunderbolt, page-size support, performance work, and licensing changes. It is highly relevant to Linux, kernel, hardware, and systems practitioners, though focused on one project.

Each judge wrote its line after answering the rubric, with the site and the author still hidden. Every answer behind this is in the table under Score.

The AVD driver spent barely 3 months in Asahi's downstream tree before being submitted to the mailing list, the project's shortest turnaround for a major SoC component.

The article gives no link or citation for it.

    The article says

“The AVD driver has spent barely 3 months in our downstream tree and is already on the list. This is our shortest turnaround time yet for a major SoC component”

  2. No source givenNumber

The AVD driver and related Devicetree changes total around 13000 lines of code, while the macaudio driver and Devicetree changes are about 3100 lines.

Google's P3S works by writing the appropriate TCR bits when switching to a process with a different page table granularity, so its performance penalty is effectively zero.

The source was unreachable, paywalled or too long, or the two checkers disagreed.

    The article says

“Because this is a single register write, and because this is a no-op for “native” page size processes, the performance penalty is effectively zero”
